Volunteer Opportunities
Mentors
“I Have A Dream” Foundation Oregon mentors are Dream Makers who are matched with one of our Dreamers who are in grades 3-12. Our mentors are caring adult role models and friends. All “I Have A Dream” Oregon mentors start out as volunteers with an after school program run by “I Have A Dream” Oregon. They provide a non judgmental ear to listen and shoulder to lean on for our Dreamers. Mentors are one of many adults who will help to guide our Dreamers down a healthy and safe pathway towards their goals. Mentoring is not therapy or tutoring. It is a relationship built on trust that flourishes over time and therefore requires commitment from both the Dream Maker and the Dreamer. Together, they form a partnership that enriches two lives simultaneously. “I Have A Dream” Foundation Oregon mentors reinforce to Dreamers that they are special and encourage them to be the best they can be in and outside of school. Research has shown that young people who are supported by caring adults and have consistent positive connections with adults do better in school and are happier in all parts of their lives.
Program Volunteers
“I Have A Dream” Foundation Oregon volunteers are Dream Makers who work directly with one of the after school programs that are run at specific school sites around the metropolitan area. A program volunteer can be a tutor, a group leader or assist our program coordinators with direct help in managing the Dreamers in their after school activities. Program volunteers are enthusiastic people who want to share their time and expertise. Our program volunteers are dedicated individuals who help our after school programs run smoothly and safely.
TUTORS provide a caring and supportive environment to a Dreamer or group of Dreamers while using their expertise or strengths in Math, Science, English, Writing or any other subject that may help the Dreamers succeed in school.
GROUP LEADERS conduct fun and exciting recreational activities to Dreamers. Group leaders meet with program coordinators to discuss their ideas for leading a group. Possible activities can range from arts to sports to dramatics. It is always important to take into account the needs and interests of the Dreamers.
DIRECT PROGRAM VOLUNTEERS help our program coordinators run the day to day operations of the after school programs. These volunteers think quickly on their feet, have lots energy and enjoy interacting with large groups of children.
One-time Event Volunteers
“I Have A Dream” Foundation Oregon one-time volunteers are Dream Makers who want to get involved with the agency but cannot commit to the time requirements of being a mentor or program volunteer. These volunteers donate their time and energy to a specific upcoming event that will benefit the agency and the dreamers in some way. One-time event volunteering is perfect for individuals who are curious about “I Have A Dream” Foundation Oregon’s mission and want to get some hands on experience with our agency.
